Trick or Treat - Oreo Spiders
It is Halloween! That time of the year where our little ghosts and goblins dress up as ghosts and goblins and go around the neighborhood trick-or-treating!
Officially Halloween isn't until October 31st, but our town celebrates Halloween on the last sunday of October. We had our Trick-or-Treat time this weekend in the afternoon and had wonderful sunny weather. This is one time of the year that the kids don't grumble about dressing up, are willing lug their own load (of candy) and uncomplainingly walk several blocks without asking to be picked up and carried home. Try getting them to do this any other time of year!
This weekend we also went to a Halloween party. I took these spider treats for the kids. They are really simple to make. Once I showed her how, my 6 year old made a full tray of these while I took a nice looong hot shower! That was my "Treat" part of the "Trick-or-Treat"!
These disappeared off the tray quite fast, so the kids must have liked them - and judging by the smile on the spider fella's face, he must have loved going to the party too!

Such a simple and creative idea... spiders it will be for this halloween :)
Cute looking spideys and simple to do.
Never seen such pretty spiders before, SH. And rather easy to make, I must say. Can you please please blog about more such recipes which are easy for children? I too love looong hot showers, you know. :)
Love it, SH! Absolutely wonderful. Your kids must adore you!
That's one scary spider, shaking in my boots!!;))
Good one Saffron
Wow...for the first time in life I liked spiders ;). They look sooo cute.
I am scared now...No...not looking at the spiders....but from the story of "hot showers". Do u really need to bribe the kids to take a shower?? I better learn all different ways of bribing before I get a kid :).
Fabulous fabulous idea!!
I'm supposed to bake cupcakes for tomorrow's party at school - should have volunteered for some fun snack like this instead. But then there's always next year!
Mandira, Cooking Memoir :) they are sooo simple to make, its scary!
Vaishali Ahh! yes, simple recipes...well there is always the "you mix the dough for chappati and mommy will take a shower" trick, but that always backfires!! flour all over the kitchen :)
Gini blush, thanks!! Don't know about adore, but I can safely say that they don't want to trade me :) I've asked!!
FH Thanks! If you are really scared, you can always eat 'em!
Ah, Shilpa, Shilpa!! you have so much to learn...bribes, threats, pleads, ultimatums...I am not going to scare you with horror stories, even though the timing is perfect :)
Manisha Yup, you can volunteer to bring these and have Medha make them!! win-win situation :)
I was blog -hopping and definitely wanted to stop by and comment on ur Spider Treats. They indeed look SPOOOOOOOOOOKY!!!!!!!!
They are the prettiest spiders I have ever seen SH !
Wonderful, what a neat idea !!!!
Hi SH,
Sweet and tasty spiders!!!
I hate spiders! But these are good enough to eat! :)
And I have to agree with shilpa.....i better start learning!
Praveena
Very creative indeed. Happy Haloween.
Really great idea!I'll copy you!;))

!!.
These spiders are so cute. Very creative saffron. Thanks for the idea.
I was browsing to steal somebody's idea and your spider caught my eye. I'm throwing a post halloween party for my kids' playmates tomorrow and doing a spider theme. I have oreo with orange color cream and going to do this. May I ask how you did the paper arrangement? Your cookie'll make a nice pair with my spider cupcake. Thanks. Itz going to be a big hit for sure.
-Nandini.
Wow! The spiders look great!(not spooky!)
Let me ask my kid about that "trading" thing. ;)
Your spiders are too cute for words
Saffron those are so cute...oops sorry so SCARY!!! Hope your kids have loads of fun
happy halloween, i was looking at your posts.specially the diwali ones...yummy
even i prepared this almond burfi for diwali but procedure is slightly different.
well presented SH.
Very creative. Excellent!
By the way, I am going through you site. I am not much of a cook nor much of a food connoisseur. They way you write the post and recipes is excellent. But what amazed me most are the pictures! Amazing work on the photos. I am curious of the equipment you use. I don't want to take too much of your comment space so I will send you an email with specific questions I have.
By the way, I did kind of a homage to food blogs a week ago :)
WOW!!!!! never thought spiders could look so YUMMY!!!!! Good job there SH. :)
How creative....no wonder the kids loved it!
Cheers,Trupti
Lovely idea ! They look so cute
First time leaving a comment here. You have a great blog!
Oreo Spiders! What a cute idea! I am going to try this for my little girl.
prabha aka desimom
oh I'm too late! Any cutie spiders left for me :P
I love oreos, but they're so hard to find here in the Uk...
This is such a cool and exciting halloween treat... If I were a kid, I would leap onto these yummy cruncy spiders ;-)
These are too cute. These are some spiders that will not make me run out of the room screaming ;-)
Did you get inspired by these

:-O
The spiders look amazing!
I am planning to try making them with my son. This may sound dumb.. but I have a question- how did you stick the pretzels sticks to the cookie?
BSDN
Thanks for stopping by! Hope you are doing good. I'm sure you are eagerly awaiting (as we all are!) the arrival of your little one. Best Wishes and Good Luck.
Priya, Archana, MT
Thanks girls!
Praveena
Don't worry! they (the kids) will always be one step ahead of you! sigh!
Anita, Saffron
Feel free! I got the idea from another mom at a halloween party several years back.

The paper arrangement is nothing by a brown lunch bag - pleated and then cut into small strips. What can I say! I'm cheap :-) I don't like spending bucks on a bag of crinkly paper !!
RP, Anupama, Ashwini
Thanks! yes the kids had a lot of fun.
lakshmi
Looking forward to your blog about the burfi!
TDNA
Thanks! Camera is run-of-mill I'm afraid - a Sony cybershot 3.2 megapixel. I've figured out a few spots in the house that get good sunlight and take my pictures there. I would like to get a digital SLR, but those puppies are expensive!!
ps. I love MAD!
Rooma, Trupti, Krithika
Thanks! it's really easy..and the kids love it...give it a try.
Prabha
Welcome! I'm sure your little one will love making and eating it.
Gattina
Come one over...I can make more!
Scott
No Oreos! you poor thing! Well, you could always substitute another cream filled dark cookie.
Alison
Thats exactly what the kids did :)
Meeta
I know what you mean. It did take me a little while to be able to eat them :) but the kids had not such problems!
Anon
Those are cute! Thanks so much for the links! I've been making these spiders for a few years now. My inspiration was from another mom at my son's preschool several years ago, but I got rid of the frosting which I felt was too much sugar on an oreo!!
Anon
You just "stick" them in the sides - that is what I do...or you can gently pry apart the cookie, put the pretzels in and then stick the top back...that's what my daughter did.
very cute idea..imaginative!
The bunch of spideys reminded me of the super scary movie ARACHNOPHOBIA....booooooooo
Wonderful idea!
Oh dear!! I'm scared just looking at them!! :):) Great idea!
That is a super Halloween treat!!!
Hey Saffron,
That's a fantastic picture gallery you've put together there: the most eye catching of them all being ofcourse the oreo spider cookies! A novel idea indeed. Will surely feature as part of my 4 year old's birthday menu!
Hats off to you for having the patience to cook in the kalchatti, despite being a resident of the US. While most of us in India, despite having ample domestic help, have begun to opt for nonstick and microwaveproof cookware, you still have the patience to use traditional utensils, and care for them as you would your own babies!

Hello! I've been looking for a cute and easy spider treat recipe to take to my kindergartner's class. They are learning rhymes, and Little Miss Muffett happens to be one of my daughter's favorites. What better snack then spiders?
When I showed her the photo, she got so excited and can't wait to get home from school and make these. I love that it's a snack she can make herself.
Thanks for the great and simple idea! And I agree with others...your photos are gorgeous! Great photos are not always taken with a fancy camera; sometimes it just takes a decent camera and a good artistic eye - you obviously have that!
Hi Saffron,
Long time no blog...
I have been waiting eagerly for your new blog for quite some time now.
Hope things are fine at your end.
Gayathri
it is the middle of the night here and I got my sorry hinie out of bed realizing tomorrow is my 4 year olds halloween party for school! I started searching on line for last minute treats(literally last minute) hahaha anyways I just want to say thank you , you saved this busy mommy and my little Liams day tomorrow and that means the world to me!!!
and what an adorable idea Ive made the little spiders and there is still time for a little sleep tonight......and the greatest thing about it is my lil sweet pea can quickly make some of his own spiders in the morning before we head out for school so thanks agian and again
